Take Part in a Media Bootcamp

    |

The Association of European Journalists in Bulgaria in partnership with the Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission are organizing a week-long Media Bootcamp for high school students interested in journalism. The training  is sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria and will be held from June 28 – July 5, 2020, at the campus of the American University in Blagoevgrad. The camp will offer up to 20 Bulgarian high school students with a demonstrated interest in journalism the opportunity to work with international and local media experts and to develop their own media projects.

If you would like to take part in the camp, follow these steps:

    1. Send us a journalistic story in English by April 15, 2020.

The piece might be tied to one of our monthly topics or on a different topic you have decided to cover. The selection jury will select the best materials whose authors will compete to take part in the summer camp. It will be made up of one representative from AEJ-Bulgaria, one representative from the Fulbright Commission, one representative of the US Embassy, and journalists representing broadcast, print and online media.

Note: We will consider as entries for the competition all the stories in English we have received since January 2020 but you need to fill out the application form.

    1. Consider the following selection criteria. In choosing the winners, the judges will consider:
    • Topic relevance
    • Style of storytelling
    • Story structure
    • Good use of quotes/clips
    • Human interest potential
    • News-worthiness
    • Interview techniques
    • The range and variety of stories submitted

    1.  Complete this application form
    2. A member of the jury will get in touch with the shortlisted candidates

The organizers will cover all travel and accommodation expenses. The selected participants will be invited to attend the summer school as part of the Media Literacy in the Classroom project.

The winners will be announced in June, 2020.

If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].

    Good luck!

    Eligibility criteria:

Must be enrolled as a high school student in Bulgaria before May 31st, 2020.

The closing date for entries is April 15, 2020. No entries will be accepted as part of the competition past this deadline but they might be published on sCOOL Media’s site.

The Journalism Bootcamp competition requires English proficiency at B1/B2 level.

In cases where a story has been produced by a team of students, the team’s leader receives the nomination for the summer camp.
